Optimize Your Vacation with a Little Prep Work

We’re all making summer vacation plans; where we’re going and what we’re doing. But what about how we feel and how we look? There are a myriad of benefits that come along with taking a vacation, and just about all of them can be maximized by good health.

Vacations can get expensive, they take planning and a vacation means time away from work. Doesn’t it make sense to get the most out of your vacation with a little prep? Here are a few tips to optimize your vacation by taking care of yourself and putting in a little prep work.

Start a couple of months out.

Setting goals around your health initiatives is essential. Firstly, setting a goal allows you to pace yourself and stay on track with a plan. Secondly, goals give you a light at the end of the tunnel. While good health practices are always important, if you’re stepping it up a notch with extra workouts or an increased restrictive diet, it’s nice to be able to count down the days and get excited about your vacation being the end to all your hard work and discipline.

It’s smoothie time!

Get into vacation mode and start your day with a tropical smoothie. Ditch the carbs and fat and instead, go with in-season fresh fruits and veggies. You can literally knock out half of your fruit and vegetable servings at the start of the day in a delicious, fresh breakfast smoothie. Throwing in a couple handfuls of spinach is a really easy way to pack protein, fiber and tons of vitamins. Another helpful tip is to skip the blender and make a small investment in a single serving smoothie maker. The ease of cleanup and travel will help keep you on track. If you’re looking for the protein powder that fits your health goals, just talk to a trainer!

Don’t destroy all your hard work.

We have nothing against fruity drinks on the beach, but while you’re there, get up and explore! Take a hike, try stand up paddle boarding (it’s easier than it looks), even just walking around your lodging area in the morning can kick start your metabolism for the day. It’s so easy to find fun, exciting activities while on vacation that you can’t explore back home. And yes, dancing the night away at a club totally counts.

Up your stamina.

While vacation time can be thrilling, it can also be exhausting, especially the older we get. In the months or weeks leading up to your vacation, focus on activities and foods that increase your stamina. Take your workout routine a little farther, get a little more sleep, drink a little more water. These small changes can lead to a healthier, happier, more energized you. You can lay around at home…for a lot cheaper.
