10 Mar 10 Mindless Things You Can Do Throughout the Day to Get Healthier
At Pinnacle Fitness Club, we believe in small changes that lead to lifestyle changes over time. We see it all the time, the “All or nothing” mentality just isn’t sustainable. We find that drastic life changes aren’t as successful as incremental moves toward being a healthier, happier, more balanced person. In that vein, here are 10 small changes you can make to your everyday life, starting today!
Drink More Water…duh
This is probably one of the most underestimated things you can do to improve your health. Drinking more water helps curb your appetite, increase your energy and it’s great for your skin. There are even smart water bottles that can keep you on track throughout the day prompting you to drink more.
Take Walking Breaks Every Couple Hours
Did you know taking breaks at work actually increases productivity? Taking walking breaks also energizes you, improves circulation and they are scientifically proven to make you feel like less of a slob. We made that last one up, but you know it’s true. Feel like you can’t get away? Take your phone with! Get through emails, create to do lists, or make a client call.
Add a Fruit or Veggie to Your Diet
Sometimes we forget that we actually really like strawberries because far too often, it’s a donut that’s in front of us. Add just one fruit and/or vegetable to your daily diet and remind yourself how amazing asparagus is, or that an orange is the perfect midday snack.
Stretch in the Morning and Before Bed
Not only is a slow, deep stretch a really fantastic way to get your blood flowing, if you make a habit of it, you will likely retain more mobility as the years pass. Stretching also increases your energy levels and prevents injury.
Take 15 Minutes to Meditate
Talk about a mindless way to improve health, it doesn’t get easier than this. Meditation relieves stress, increases your attention span, and actually boosts your immune system. Sometimes “turning off” can prove a little difficult for some. Try guided meditation first. Give our Moving Meditation class a try and learn how to clear your thoughts and relax with breathing techniques.
Do Lunges for the First 5 Minutes of Every Show You Watch
We know you need your down time, there’s nothing wrong with a little Netflix every once in awhile. That being said, it’s easy to get sucked into a binge. Stagnation lends itself to more stagnation. If you get up and move your body with the start of each show, you might find yourself picking up the room, or tossing some laundry in real quick.
Don’t Give In To One Craving
On any given day, you face a lot of temptation. Your blood sugar dips or it’s just more convenient to hit the drive-thru. Telling yourself “No” just once each day will firstly make it easier each time, and secondly eliminate one bad choice each day.
Get Your Eight Hours
We know, it’s hard to make time for everything and still get your eight hours of sleep, but this one is right up there with drinking more water. Lack of sleep increases stress, zaps your energy and depletes your immune system.
Optimize Your Environment
Draw back the curtains and let the light in, open up the windows and get some fresh air, get some air filtering plants, find a playlist that energizes you, invest in a stand up desk. Concentrate on optimizing the environments you spend the most time in, little by little.
Cut Your Dine Out Meals in Half
Portions have gotten completely out of control, especially when dining out. You know that feeling you get when you should have stopped about seven bites ago? Stop making yourself miserable and box up half your meal right when you get it. If you actually want the second half a couple of hours later, go for it.
Breaking life long habits and addictions doesn’t happen overnight, neither does realizing you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of those around you. Creating the healthy lifestyle that works for you will take time. These ten actionable steps toward a healthier life are a great place to start!
